Greetings Club Members,

The forecast is calling for some cooler running weather.  Finally!  I am sick and tired of all this heat and humidity.  The weather was fairly nice for the Halloween Half Marathon on October 25th.  We had a record number of runners and walkers.  Thanks to Martin County Parks and Recreation, the sponsors and the volunteers for a great event.  We have already started the planning for next year’s race and promise that it will be even bigger and better.

Marathons and marathon runners have been in the news a lot lately.  One New York Times article, “Plodders Have a Place, but Is It in a Marathon?” has created a lot of buzz.  The article quoted a women’s running coach who said, “It used to be that running a marathon was worth something – there used to be a pride saying that you ran a marathon, but not anymore.  Now it’s, ‘How low is the bar?’”As a middle-of-the-pack marathoner, at best, I must admit that my loyalties are with the plodders.  As I see it, big races mean big sponsors and more money and perks for the faster runners.  The Chicago Marathon had port-a-potties at the start line reserved only for seeded runners.  Just think – no lines!  And a lot of the slower runners are running for charities or to support a cause.  At your next race, try to save a few bananas and bagels for the slower runners.  They’ll thank you for it.

We have several races on our calendar for November and December, including the Harbor Branch 5k in Fort Pierce, the YMCA Jingle Bell 5k and the Junior League 5k at Halpatiokee Park.  Sign up for a race today and stay motivated during the busy holiday season.

As always, please email me at lauriecpeterson@gmail.com with any questions, comments or suggestions.
